From the Roots: Why True Protection Starts With the Mothers

"But that biological spark requires sanctuary to grow. A mother cannot pour from an empty vessel, and she cannot provide that deep security when she is fighting just to survive."

We talk endlessly about protecting children, but we keep missing the foundational truth: the most effective way to protect a child is to protect the mother who carries them.

I believe the physical intensity of natural childbirth was designed by God on purpose—that excruciating passage followed by the sudden, profound relief of holding new life—to ignite an instantaneous, fiercely protective love that anchors a child in safety and compassion. But that biological spark requires sanctuary to grow. A mother cannot pour from an empty vessel, and she cannot provide that deep security when she is fighting just to survive.

People often judge a mother for staying in an abusive relationship, not realizing that survival has its own logic. When a woman stays, it is rarely out of choice; it is because the human brain is wired for immediate survival, doing whatever it takes to endure—even if that means slipping into a state of denial until a safer way out can finally be found.

For generations, women were locked into silence behind closed doors. And while we have fought for the freedom to walk away, the modern world has simply replaced old chains with new ones. Today, mothers are trapped by an impossible cost of living, the looming fear of a punitive child welfare system, and an economic structure that forces single mothers to choose between paying rent and being present for their kids—leaving children to fend for themselves or in the hands of strangers.

We cannot fix every broken past, but we can change the ground we stand on. True preventative care doesn’t start in a courtroom or a clinic; it starts by making sure mothers are housed, financially secure, and genuinely safe. Until we lift the crushing weight of modern survival off single mothers, we will keep treating the symptoms of a broken society while ignoring the root.
